Bad ideas die out, good ideas are reused and further developed. Open source software grows organically. Often hundreds of developers working on a single system. The result usually has better quality than a single developer can never reach.

Not only a free source code is important but also that the development is supported by a broad community. The more people participate the sooner bugs are fixed.
